The Crown & Thistle

We stayed in room 2 on the night of the 12/8. The staff were all lovely and the food we ordered was very tasty. There is a wood fired pizza oven too . The room was air conditioned, newly refurbished, with period features and super clean. We were attending a funeral nearby on the 13th and location was excellent for us. Particularly impressed with the staff when a guest collapsed in the bar, very competent and obviously trained to deal with it . Free parking at the back of the hotel. Abingdon is a great town to visit and the hotel is a short walk away from the Thames.

My son and daughter-in-law had their wedding reception at the Crown and Thistle last Friday and it was perfect in every way. The food was delicious, the pizzas in the evening being a particular hit with the guests! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, all contributing to making it a day to remember. Emma did a fantastic job organising the day, ensuring it ran smoothly so that the family could relax and enjoy themselves. Many guests stayed over and whilst there were one or two minor issues with rooms they were dealt with promptly. The decor does look a little tired in places but the rooms were clean and very comfortable. I must finish this review with a shout out for the breakfast! I was told it would be good and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Really great.

This is a review of the restaurant only - we had a lovely meal here and were welcomed with our dog in the dog-friendly dining area. Both me (vegan) and partner found the food to be of a high standard and enjoyed a main and dessert. Vegan option of pea and mint tortellini was tasty and a nice change from the uninspired options you usually find in pubs. Dessert was also great. Both finished the meal saying we would love to come back (would love to see more plant-based options so I can try something different next time!). The teddy bear latte art and dog ice cream for our pooch were a nice bonus!

We had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Crown and Thistle and it was everything we had hoped for. All the staff were excellent both leading up to and on the day - Ruth was particularly amazing and handled everything on the day. The food was wonderful and the refurbished hotel rooms were also brilliant. We had a lovely day and so did all our guests. I would absolutely recommend the Crown and Thistle as a wedding venue!

We eat here to check it out for another occasion with friends. Not often do we say we were pleased we came out as both of us enjoy cooking at home. But so pleased we did as the whole evening was a success from beginning to end. The feel of the restaurant is contemporary and welcoming. We booked and were sat in a lovely position. The service from all who waited on us was beyond the normal that we are use too. Each member engaging with us and an obvious air that they wanted to be there. We had a starter , main and desert , unusual for us to find something in all three categories. The menu was very varied with a lot of choice , Fish and vegetarian. We both agreed we would certainly return especially with our friends. If it were possible to give anywhere a 10 out of 10 this evening spent here got that from us both. We eat out a lot and wouldn’t give that score readily without a lot of considerations. Wholeheartedly recommend and well done, maybe the jewel in the crown 🙂

This is a review for the restaurant, although my wife stayed at the hotel and said it was good! We had lunch on a sunny Sunday in August and had the roast. Greatly recommended, generous portions, well cooked veg and meat and the staff were very friendly The courtyard was a nice setting for a lovely lunch
