I recently hosted a work meeting at the Derby Conference Centre, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. From a professional standpoint, the venue is fantastic. The meeting room was excellent—clean, modern, and well-equipped, and having free on-site parking made the logistics effortless for everyone involved. The entire team was attentive throughout the day and truly couldn't do enough to ensure our meeting ran smoothly. However, it was their post-event customer service that really blew me away. After leaving, I realised I’d left my laptop charger and mouse behind. I called up in a bit of a panic, and Leah Eastap was absolutely brilliant. She handled everything immediately, making all the arrangements to post them back to me and sending over the tracking number right away. It’s rare to find a venue that provides such proactive care for their guests. Huge thanks to Leah and the team, we will definitely be back! Tim Prestwood COO Virdis Chemicals Ltd
Lovely hotel with friendly staff. Our room was clean and stocked with everything we needed. The breakfast was nice and had a good variety of food and beverages. The primary issue was the heating was on in the building. Considering it is May and the outside temperature was above 20 degrees, having the heating on made our room even hotter. The radiators in the room were hot to touch and my partner attempted to turn one off, but had no luck. When the staff were alerted of this, the staff didn't realise that the heating had come on. When we got up the following morning, the heating was on again. This is an issue that needs to be looked at. Having the heating on at this time of the year when the weather is warmer is unnecessary. The heat in the room, even with the windows open and the fan on, caused us both discomfort. Also, our friends stayed in a room on the floor above ours. Unlike us, they had no wardrobe and no fan in their room. Surely every room should have these? Seemed a little unfair considering they paid the same for their room as we did for ours.
Visited the Derby Comedy Club on a Groupon deal for 2 with food. Venue and location were great, staff was friendly, but the quality of the food, seating and comedy was lacking in my opinion. We ordered a burger and a pizza. The Pizza seemed like it was just store-bought and heated. The burger was practically an economy big mac. Drinks were not included in the deal and had to be paid separately. While pricy in my opinion, it's what all venues charge nowadays for drinks. Show was set to start at 7.30pm, but the MC didn't enter the stage until 8pm, so there was a 30 minute wait for the show to even start. There was a 15-minute break in between each act, which I think is very lengthy. Considering we'd been there for 3+ hours where the show should have started at 7.30pm and ended at about 10.20pm, there's not a good balance between entertainment and break time. We effectively only had 1 hour of actual comedic entertainment. The seats were not comfortable at all, they were too narrow and too closely placed side by side, causing your legs and arms to make contact with your neighbouring viewers. Had to stretch and reposition myself several times during the show. The acts were not too impressive either. Kudo's to the MC Jon Pearson for involving the crowd. That's the kind of vibes you would expect at a comedy club. Paddy Lennox gave us a good laugh with his witty comments and body language, though the topic of choice seemed superficial and spent too much time on the same topic (sex). Mad Ron has a very particular style of comedy, which is probably better appreciated by native brits. There were several moments where I could not quite comprehend or understand what he said. I'm sure he's a funny bloke but it just didn't really resonate with us. Headline Eddy Brimson had a much more natural vibe to him and scored best in the storytelling department. It was a bit unfortunate that his topic of choice was similar to Paddy, making it repetitive and superficial. I do think that Eddy made some good points about comedians that they should be allowed to say anything without anyone getting butthurt. If you're the type of person who gets offended or mad when attending a comedy show, it might just not be for you. Overall, the experience was OK, but not something I'd want to repeat. Hope the venue can learn from the feedback provided. Perhaps try to coordinate topics between acts. Some overlap is fine, especially if it's very current in the news, but choosing the same main topic twice isn't appealing whatsoever.
